Best events in Barcelona

Barcelona is the capital of the autonomous region of Catalonia and the second city in Spain. It is an amazing mixture of the old and the new, of art and architecture, of sun and sport and relaxation. It is at once a cultural centre – including the architectural works of Antoni Gaudí and Lluís Domènech i Montaner, which have been designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites  - and a hotspot for tourism and it knows how to look after its visitors as anyone who attended the Olympic Games in 1992 will testify.

Architecturally Barcelona is celebrated for two particular periods in its rich history – the buildings in the Gothic Quarter many of which date from medieval times and some from the Roman occupation and going forward many to the period between 1885 and 1950 for the Catalan modernista architecture which was connected to what was known in other parts of Europe as Art Nouveau..

So what should the sports-loving visitor be looking out for? Well obviously the No.1 attraction is the world renowned Barcelona FC with its current star forwards Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, playing out of the famous Camp Nou stadium. But sport in Barcelona is more than just Messi (so to speak). Firstly Barcelona also boasts another top football team in RCD Espanyol and then, as befits an Olympic city, Barcelona host sports as diverse as Road Running, the annual Barcelona Open Tennis competition and Formula 1 and GPT sports such as   Formula One Spanish Grand Prix, Catalan motorcycle Grand Prix, and the Spanish GT Championship and GP2 Series.

There is also plenty available for the lover of music and dance. When you walk through

Barcelona streets you can see people dancing the Sardana which is the national dance of Catalonia. This is where circles of people join their hands together and with them raised; dance with small, precise steps, slowly round and round whilst others join in to enlarge the circle. You may also like to take in a Flamenco show in Barcelona's Spanish Village Poble Espanyol Tablao de Carmen named after one of the greatest flamenco dancers of all time Carmen Amaya.

Come to Barcelona for a really different and unusual holiday – whether your taste is football, flamenco or food, if you like unusual museums and friendly people, this is the city for you
