Best events in Rome

How can you do justice to a city like Rome in the space of one web page, a city known as the Eternal City, a city with a history going back more than two and a half thousand years and yet one that always manages to combine age-old tradition with modernity? There is an old saying that Rome wasn’t built in a day and that could be well applied to the would-be visitor. As a rule of thumb, however many days you were planning, add on an extra one or two because there is just so much to see. Rome is a global city, among the top twenty world destinations and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Whatever event may have brought you to Rome, you will not want to miss out on the many unforgettable features that this unique city, built on its seven hills, possesses. Starting with its ancient heritage, no visitor will want to miss the Colosseum (70–80 AD), the largest amphitheater ever built in the Roman Empire, and at one time as many as 60,000 spectators would watch gladiators in combat. This is just one of so many relics and monuments of Rome’s classical past. Nor should you miss out on Rome’s vast medieval heritage and, moving on in time, the elegant and ornate buildings of the Renaissance. The Papal republic of Vatican City is also an essential part of most tourists’ itineraries. And of course you will want to toss a coin in the world famous Travi fountain.
When you are tired and weary from touring and “rubbernecking”, what will you do for relaxation? There are two renowned football clubs, both playing their matches in Rome’s Olympic Stadium: A.S.Roma and S.S.Lazio. Football is a major element in the life of the city and the matches between the two local rivals inevitably bring controversy in their wake. Italy is now a force in Rugby Union, having been part of the Six Nations contest since 2000. At the moment Italy’s international games also take place at the Olympic Stadium. The other major sporting event is the annual ATP Masters tennis tournament which is held each May attracting many of the world’s top players.
Rome is also a home for music and the arts and there are many concert halls and an opera house. It is also renowned for its cuisine including many dishes based on produce from the nearby Campagna including lamb and vegetables. All in all there is no doubt that your stay will be memorable and that you will want to return.
