Best events in Verona
Verona has a distinction unmatched by anywhere else (with the possible exception of London) as having been the setting for no fewer than three of the plays of William Shakespeare, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Taming of the Shrew and Romeo and Juliet. There is in fact one building which claims to have a Juliet balcony but there is no real connection other than in legend.
What is undeniably true is that, maybe with a little help from Shakespeare, Verona is a very big tourist attraction on account of its artistic traditions, its several annual fairs and shows and the attraction of opera in the Arena, the ancient amphitheater built by the Romans. Verona is also regarded as extremely important from a historical and cultural viewpoint, having been named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Be sure to catch up with Roman and medieval times when you visit the city as there is a great deal to see. The Piazza delle Erbe was originally the Roman Forum, the rectangular piazza is in the heart of the historic center and is surrounded by beautiful medieval buildings and towers. In the middle is a 14th century fountain with a Roman statue.
The Piazza dei Signori is a small square surrounded by monumental buildings and look for the statue of Dante in the center with other historical figures depicted on top of the buildings. This square was once the seat of the city's public institutions and contains the Palazzo del Capitanio with its tower, the 15th century Loggia del Consiglio, formerly the town hall, and the 14th century Palazzo della Prefettura, formerly the Palazzo del Governo that was a residence of the Scaligeri family.
The Roman amphitheater is in the city’s largest piazza, the Piazza Bra, the third largest in Italy and could seat some 25,000 spectators in its 44 tiers of marble seats. Now you can go and see an opera there as there is an ambitious program throughout the summer. Football fans are not forgotten either. You can choose between A.C.Chieva Verona or Hellas Verona F.C; both play in Serie A at the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi.
And you can be sure of wonderful Italian sunshine, warm hearted people, plenty of pasta…what more could you ask for from a vacation?
