AC Milan is one of the biggest clubs in international club football and the second most successful in Europe, having won the Champions Leagues seven times. Milan shares its 80,000-seater stadium, the San Siro, with their city rivals, Inter Milan.
The club was founded in 1899 by two Englishmen, originally as the Milan Cricket and Football Club. The English influence is symbolised by the the flag of England in the club crest.
The club has won 18 Serie A titles, the first of which came in 1901. Their most recent title success came in 2011. In addition to their League and European achievements, Milan has also won eleven domestic cups and in 2007 the club won their first and only FIFA Club World Cup.
Milan is currently managed by Massimiliano Allegri, who joined the club in 2010. Allegri guided Milan to success in Serie A in his first full season in charge. Although they are not currently the dominant force in Italy, Allegri’s Milan still continue to challenge Juventus in Serie A, having finished in the top three for the past two seasons.
Former Italian Prime Minister, Silvio Berlusconi, is the club’s president. Berlusconi has hired many high profile managers over the years, such as Carlo Ancelotti, Fabio Capello and Giovanni Trapattoni.
AC Milan is currently in a transition period in the club’s history. In the last two seasons, many of the club’s experienced old-guard have left the club, including Italian legends Gianluca Zambrotta, Allessandro Nesta, Gennaro Gattuso, Paulo Maldini, Andrea Pirlo and Filippo Inzaghi along with Dutch midfielder Clarence Seedorf. These departures have paved the way for younger players to lead the club going forward.
Allegri has developed a very succesfull combination of experience and youth in his team. Older players like Riccardo Montolivo, Nigel de Jong, Phillippe Mexes blend well with young wonder-kids such as Mario Balotelli, Stephan El Shaarawy and M’Baye Niang. Other key players for the Rossoneri (The Red and Blacks) include Kevin-Prince Boateng, Robinho and Antonio Nocerino.
