AS Roma

A.S. Roma was founded in 1927 in the city of Rome by Italo Foschi. The club has competed in the top Italian division, Serie A, for more than sixty years.

Roma has won the Serie A title three times in it's history, most recently in 2001. The club has also won nine Coppa Italia and finished runners-up in the European Cup in 1984.

Roma’s home stadium is the Stadio Olimpico, which seats over 70,000 spectators. The stadium is shared with their Rome rivals, Lazio. However, the club is expected to move into a newly built stadium in 2016. The Derby della Capitale is the derby match between Roma and Lazio. It is said to be one of the biggest and most heated in world football.

While Roma is not considered to be one of the superpowers in Italian football, the club is the fifth most supported  team in Italy and they regularly participate in either the Champions League or the Europa League. In the 2012-13 season Roma finished 6th, one place above rivals Lazio. The last time Roma finished higher than 6th was in 2010 when they finished as runners-up to Inter Milan.

One of the clubs most celebrated players is Francesco Totti. Totti has been at Roma since 1989 starting his career in the youth team. Totti became the club’s captain in 1998. With over 280 goals to his name in more than 670 games, Totti holds the record for most goals and appearances for Roma.

Notable former managers of the club include Claudio Ranieri, Fabio Capello and Sven-Goran Eriksson. Aside from Totti, some of Roma’s key players are Daniele De Rossi, Miralem Pjanic, Michael Bradley and Pablo Osvaldo. New manager, Rudi Garcia, who joined the club from Lille in June 2013, will be hoping to get the best out of these players to help get the club back into the Champions League.
