Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are an American professional baseball team based in Anaheim, California and a  member of the West division of Major League Baseball's American League (AL). The Angels have played home games at Angel Stadium of Anaheim since 1966. The "Angels" name was continued by former film star Gene Autry, famed as the “Singing Cowboy”, out of tribute for the Los Angeles Angels, a former Minor League franchise.  The American League franchise of today was established in 1961 by Gene Autry, the team's first owner who bought the rights to the Angels name.

The name has in fact varied over the years. From 1965 until 1996 they were known as the California Angels, from 1997 until 2004 coinciding with the move to the Angel Stadium of Anaheim as the Anaheim Angels and under their present designation since 2005.

The highlight of the Angels’ fifty-five year history was 2002 when they won the World Series for the first and to date only time with a tight 4-3 series victory over their rivals from up-state, the San Francisco Giants. The Angels won the opening two games only for the Giants to come back and win the next three. With defeat staring them in their faces, the Angels won the sixth game to tie the series and then on 27th October 2002 made history at Edison Field by winning the decisive game.

In 2009, the Angels won the AL West Division championship for the third straight season. 2013 was the fourth straight year in which the team did not qualify for the postseason, but marked the 11th straight year in which the Angels franchise drew more than 3 million fans in attendance, and made 30 seasons of at least 2 million fans in attendance.

Among players who have made a great contribution over the years, let’s start with Chuck Finley based on his 14 seasons with the Angels and his career 165-140 record with the team. Finley was four times selected to the AL All-Star team, and in 1989 and 1990 twice finished second in the AL with a combined ERA of 2.48. Finley regularly finished in the AL top ten rankings in strikeouts, complete games and innings pitched.

Jim Fregosi played ten seasons for the Angels, making his first Major League appearance in 1961, hitting .222 in 11 games for the club. A shortstop, Fregosi was selected to the AL All-Star team in six seasons from 1964 through 1970, only missing in 1965. He also won his only Gold Glove in 1967, with a .965 fielding percentage.

Nolan Ryan is the Major League record holder with 5,714 strikeouts, 2,416 with the Angels. In his eight California seasons, he led the AL in strikeouts seven times, including a record 383 in 1973. In his Angels career, he only allowed 6.3 hits per nine innings. Ryan also pitched four no-hitters, and made the AL All-Star team five times while with the club.

Their current squad includes 2 iconic players. The future hall of famer Albert Pujols who won 3 MVP titles and the young and rising star Mike Trout who at the age of 24 already have an MVP title under his name and is considered the best player in Baseball.
