Montpellier HSC ( MHSC )
Montpellier Hérault Sport Club, known as Montpelier HSC or Montpelier plays in the Ligue 1, the top tier of French football, with the Stade de La Mosson as its home stadium. Montpelier was originally founded at the end of World War 1 in 1919 but after mergers, the current Club emerged in 1974. It is one of only four clubs to have played in the inaugural season of La Ligue 1 and still to be playing in the top flight eighty two years later.
It was only fairly recently, in 2011-12, that Montpelier achieved the ultimate prize in French football by finishing as Ligue 1 Champions. Montpelier also won the Coupe de France twice – early in its history in 1920 and more recently in 1990, four years later they were beaten in the final, a spot they were to repeat in the League Cup in 2011.
Many famous names have played for Montpelier over the years. Laurent Blanc who at one time was manager of France’s national team, is Montpelier’s all-time leading goalscorer. Eric Cantona, later to star for Manchester United, Roger Milla from Cameroon (winner of a CAF Legend award), and Colombian Carlos Valderrama, remembered for his distinctive blond hair and flamboyant techniques on the ball. Top scorer in the year that Montpelier won the league was Arsenal star Olivier Giroud who scored 21 goals and 9 assists.
Montpelier finished in a competitive seventh place in Ligue 1, Lucas Barrios from Argentina top scored with eleven goals.
