The turn of the century was the most successful time in the history of Lazio. In 1999 it won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, won the European Super Cup and in the 1999-2000 season won the national double, a remarkable achievement for the club that has put it in a prestigious list of only 5 Italian clubs that have won the national double so far.
Società Sportiva Lazio known as S.S Lazio was founded in 1900 as a sports club. In 1910 the football team was established and in 1912 it made its first appearances. Until the establishment of A.S Roma in 1927 it was the major club in Rome. Its first success came in 1958 when it won its first Italian Cup. First championship came in the 1973-1974 season under Tommaso Maestrelli's management and with top scorer Giorgio Chinaglia at its ranks.
Lazio hadn't won any titles in the following decades. It was involved in some scandals and was also relegated to Serie B. Sergio Cragnotti who became the president of the club in 1992 invested a lot of money in the club and started buying top players of the time. His first notable purchase was of Paul Gascoigne from Tottenham Hotspur. Soon after, Lazio began contending for titles. In the 1994-1995 season it ended as the runner up with players like Giuseppe Signori (Top scorer of Serie A 3 times), Alen Bokšić, Pierluigi Casiraghi, Alessandro Nesta, Paolo Negro and Roberto Di Matteo. In the following years purchases of excellent players such as Pavel Nedvěd, Juan Veron, Christian Vieri, Roberto Mancini, Marcelo Salas and Hernan Crespo led Lazio to win titles. With manager Sven-Göran Eriksson who trained the team from 1997 until 2001 Lazio won The UEFA Cup Winners' Cup (in the very last season in which this tournament was played), the European Super Cup, an Italian Championship, 2 Italian Cups and 2 Italian Super Cups.
Ever since these glorious years Lazio has won the Italian Cup 3 more times, last time in 2013, (proving very successful in this tournament's history by winning the title 6 times in 7 final appearances) and the Italian Super Cup twice.
Holder of records in the history of the club are Giuseppe Favalli ( with 401 appearances) surpassing Giuseppe Wilson (with 394 appearances) and legendary Silvio Piola (with 148 goals) preceding Giuseppe Signori (with 127 goals). Other players which are beloved by Lazio's fans are Alessandro Nesta who grew up in the club and Bruno Giordano who debuted in the club and played for it between 1975-1985.
Lazio plays in the Olympic Stadium of Rome, which has a capacity of 72,689 seats. The Stadium is shared with its fiercest rival A.S Roma and the match between them is called Derby della Capitale (known also as the Rome derbi). It is one of the most emotionally charged derbies in world football.
With Claudio Lotito as president , Stefano Pioli as manager and a mixture of veteran and new players such as: Cristian Ledesma , Stefano Mauri , Senad Lulić , Marco Parolo , Miroslav Klose, Stefan Radu, Felipe Anderson and goal keeper Federico Marchetti, Lazio will try to contend for titles in the 2014-2015 season.
