S.S.C. Napoli is an Italian club based in Naples. The club was founded in 1926 and is the fourth most supported team in the country. The club is nicknamed the Azzurri (The Blues).

The club’s home stadium is the Stadio San paolo, which seats over 60,000 spectators and is regularly filled by the club’s fans.

Napoli has won the Italian Serie A title on two occasions, most recently in 1990. The club has also won 4 Coppa Italias and a UEFA Cup.

As recently as 2006, Napoli was playing their football in the third tier of Italian football. In 2009 the club hired Walter Mazzarri as their manager and since then the club has been on the rise. Their recent rise in stature has seen Napoli feature prominently in the Champions League and Europa Legaue. In 2013 the club finished second in Serie A.

In 2013 Mazzarri joined Inter Milan and was replaced by Rafael Benítez. Despite the recent loss of their top scorer, Edinson Cavani, Napoli possesses a squad capable of challenging for the Serie A tite. The club is captained by Paolo Cannavaro. Other key players include Gökhan İnler, Marek Hamšík, Dries Mertens and young striker Lorenzo Insigne.

The club’s all-time leading goal scorer is Argentine legend, Diego Maradona, who played for the club from 1984 to 1991. During his time at the club, Napoli enjoyed their most successful period, winning five trophies, including their only two Serie A titles. Maradona scored 81 goals for the club in 188 appearances. In his honour, Napoli have retired the number 10 jersey, the number which Maradona wore at the club.

There have been many other notable players to have played for Napoli including  Gianfranco Zola, Paolo Di Canio, Laurent Blanc and the brother of the club’s current captain, Fabio Cannavaro.
