Derby della Capitale (A.S. Roma vs. S.S. Lazio)

The Derby della Capitale, also known as the Rome Derby is an Italian derby match played between A.S. Roma and S.S. Lazio. The two sides are the biggest clubs in the Italian capital of Rome. It is well known that the Italians love their football and are very passionate about it and in no match do these passions show through more than in the Derby della Capitale. Due to the close proximity of the sides, the derby is widely regarded as the fiercest and most important in Italy.

The two clubs share the 70,000-seater Stadio Olimpico, which is always full for the Derby della Capitale. The Stadio Olimpico ('Olympic Stadium') is located by the banks of the River Tiber, a short way to the north of central Rome. The stands, which curve right around the pitch, are covered, and are divided from the pitch by a wide running track. The stadium was originally uncovered; the roof was added for the 1990 World Cup. New seating and security barriers were installed for the UEFA Champions' League Final in 2009.

Both sets of fans are known to be extremely passionate and loud. Many fans of both clubs see the derby as much more than just a football match, as there is a cultural and social divide between the supporters. Off the pitch and away from the rhetoric, Lazio and Roma supporters live and work side-by-side enjoying making jokes about their rivals based around the teams' relative Serie A positions.

The first time the two clubs met was in December 1929, when AS Roma won the match 1-0. Since then the clubs have played over 140 times. As of 2015, AS Roma have won the derby 65 times, scoring 214 goals, while SS Lazio have won it 48 times, scoring 170 goals.

The biggest winning margin in the derby is 5 goals, when AS Roma beat SS Lazio 5-0. SS Lazio’s biggest ever win over AS Roma was their 3-0 victory in 2006. In 2013 AS Roma and SS Lazio played each other in the Italian Cup Final; this was the first occasion the two had met in a final. SS Lazio won the match 1-0.

The fixture’s all-time leading scorer is AS Roma’s Dino De Costa who scored on 11 occasions. SS Lazio’s top scorer in the derby is Silvio Piola with 7. The player with the most Derby della Capitale appearances is Francesco Totti, who has played in 28 of them. Vincenzo Montella holds the record for scoring the most goals in a single derby match, when he scored 4 in AS Roma’s 5-1 victory over SS Lazio in 2002. The only player to have scored for both sides in the derby is Arne Selmossen.
