About CONCACAF Gold Cup
The CONCACAF Gold Cup is a biennial tournament, held by the governing body for football in North America, Central America and the Caribbean. National teams from across the region take part after qualifying, and in some years national teams that fall under the jurisdiction of other governing bodies have been invited to compete as guests.
The winner of the tournament is recognised as the continental champion of the region. For the 2019 Gold Cup, the number of teams involved has expanded from 12 to 16, making the outcome even harder to predict. Qualification is through the FIFA World Cup qualifying system for 6 of the teams, while the other 10 teams qualify through an alternate channel – the CONCACAF Nations League, which is a separate tournament in its own right. Since 1991, the US have won the tournament 6 times and has been runner-up 4 times, while Mexico has won the tournament on 7 occasions. The only time another team has won the CONCACAF Gold Cup was in 2000, when Canada defeated Colombia to become champions.
