About Premier League Asia Trophy
The Premier League Asia Trophy (known as the Barclays Asia Trophy for sponsorship reasons and previously the FA Premier League Asia Cup) is a friendly four-team pre-season football tournament held in Asia every two years. It is the only tournament sponsored by the Premier League to take place out of England and it is a testament to the popularity of Premier League football in the Asian continent. This year’s competition is taking place for the first time in Singapore,
The tournament commenced in Malaysia in 2003 with a Chelsea win, followed two years later in 2005 with victory for Bolton Wanderers. Portsmouth were the victors in 2007, Tottenham Hotspur won the first of these tournaments to be held in China in 2009 and Chelsea became the only team to record a second victory in 2011. Manchester City added their name to the list of champions by their victory in 2013.
The Trophy is generally comprised of three Premier League sides plus one drawn from the local area. The three Premier League teams are Arsenal, Everton and Stoke City with the fourth place being taken by a Singapore Select XI. Wednesday 15th July sees Arsenal play Stoke, followed by Everton against the Singapore XI. On Saturday 18th July, the two losing teams will play-off for third place followed by the final between the two winners.
All the English teams come to Singapore on the crest of vastly improved performances during the latter part of the 2014-15 season. Arsenal had a momentous 4-0 victory in the FA Cup as well as once again securing a Champions League spot. Their attacking force including Aaron Ramsey, Alexis Sanchez Oliver Giroud and Theo Walcott is one of the most attractive in English football.
Everton consistently improved during the season finishing in eleventh spot with their star forward Romelu Lukaku and his habit of scoring crucial goals. Stoke City, have surprised many people by their consistency and have now finished in the top ten for the second successive year. Three men shared in significant goal scoring achievements: Mame Biram Diouf, (12) Jonathan Walters (11) and Peter Crouch (10).
