The Euroleague is Europe’s highest tier of club basketball and is the most prominent competition on the continent. The tournament consists of teams from 18 different countries with 24 sides entering the competition at the group stage.
The tournament was founded in 1958 although the competition’s current format and name was adopted in 2000.
The most successful side in Euroleague Basketball is Real Madrid who have won the competition on eight occasions. Russian side CSKA Moscow, Panathinaikos of Greece and Maccabi Tel-Aviv from Israel are tied second on the all-time list with 6 championship wins each. Italian sides have won the tournament on the most occasions, winning it a combined 13 times between them. Croatian side KK Split are the only side to have won the tournament on three consecutive occasions (from 1989-1991).
Serbian coach Željko Obradović has won the tournament 8 times, more than any other coach in Euroleague history. Italian Dino Meneghin is the player with the most Euroleague wins with 7, followed by Spaniard Clifford Luyk.
The highest average points scorer in Euroleague history is American Alphonso Ford with 22.22 per game. Spaniard Jaun Carlos Navarro has the most accumulated points of all-time with 3201. Mirsad Turkcan of Turkey has the most rebounds of all time with 1287, while Greek Theodoros Papaloukas has the most assists with 977. American Anthony Parker has the highest average index rating of all time with 21.41 per game.
The highest official attendance for a Euroleague basketball match is 22567 held by KK Partizan during their match against Panathinaikos in 2009.
The biggest win in the competition’s history was Maccabi Tel Aviv’s 118-74 win over Skipper Bologna in 2004.
Since 2003 many Euroleague sides have played in exhibition matches against NBA teams from Canada and USA, with the NBA sides having won 44 of the 54 matches.
