International Champions Cup
Where can football fans in the USA, China and Australia get to see teams such as Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Real Madrid, FC Porto, Barcelona and virtually every big name club you can think of, in the flesh rather than just on TV and computer screens. The answer is the International Champions Cup.
The International Champions Cup (ICC) has brought the concept of friendly exhibition matches in pre-season featuring the really successful club teams largely but not exclusively drawn from the leading European leagues. The ICC was founded by Relevant Sports which is a sports promotion company founded in 2012 by billionaire real estate magnate and Miami Dolphins ownerStephen Ross and ex- New York Jets executive Matt Higgins.
The first two tournaments, both played in the USA, had a format of eight teams, divided into groups of four and eventually producing finalists and champions. In 2013 the inaugural tournament was won by Real Madrid with Chelsea as runners up. 2014 saw an all-English final with Manchester United holding off the challenge of perhaps their bitterest rivals Liverpool with a decisive 3-1 victory.
This year’s tournament is far more ambitious in scope. The setting for these mouth watering games is a truly global one. The ICC has been totally reorganized on a round robin basis and spread across three countries in different continents. Initially three teams will each play in Australia and China. Spectators at the Melbourne Cricket Ground will see Real Madrid, Manchester City and A.S.Roma. Real Madrid will also feature in China with games in Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Shanghai alongside A.C.Milan and Inter Milan.
The American action, spread over eleven cities, includes big European superclubs Manchester United, FC Barcelona, Chelsea FC, PSG, FC Porto, ACF Fiorentina together with four US based sides: Club América, the LA Galaxy, the New York Red Bulls, and the San Jose Earthquakes. One match has in fact been scheduled for London – newly crowned Premier League champions Chelsea will play Fiorentina and matches will also be held in Toronto and south of the border in Mexico City.
