About Oktoberfest
One of the most celebrated musical events and tourist attractions in Germany, the Oktoberfestowes its establishment to a royal wedding that took place over 200 years ago. Since that time it has been known for music, entertainment, conviviality, and great food and drink notably beer! The husband and wife concerned were Crown Prince Ludwig, later to become King Ludwig I, and Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. They decided to extend a welcome to the people of Munich to come to the party held on the fields in front of the city gates. Consequently these fields have been named Theresienwiese ("Theresa's fields") in the Crown Princess’s honor ever since. By custom they are usually known by the shorter name "Wies'n".
The grand finale of the marriage celebrations was a series of horse races in the presence of the Royal Family and when it was decided to run the races again the next year, the tradition of the Oktoberfest was born.
In 1811 it was decided to augment the horse races with an Agricultural Show, designed to boost Bavarian agriculture. The horse races have long since ceased but the agricultural show is held every three years.
It took time for the festival to reach the proportions for which it is famous today. By the last quarter of the nineteenth century, enterprising locals had set up beer tents which were naturally very popular. A fun fair with carousels and swings provided amusement for increasingly large numbers of people.
Surprisingly enough the Oktoberfest starts in September. Watch out for the Grand entry of the Oktoberfest landlords and breweries on September 19thbecause no fewer than 1,000 participants are expected. The landlords' families arrive in richly decorated carriages, followed by the horses pulling the Munich brewery drays – and of course plenty of sounding brass from a large number of bands.
On the first Sunday of the festival another time-honored tradition is the Costume and Riflemen’s Procession. For anyone interested in understanding the customs of Bavaria and the surrounding States, this event is not to be missed. You will see groups in regional costumes, “troops” wearing historical uniforms, marching bands, and much more, human and animal alike! The procession is seven kilometers long so having refreshment to hand is recommended! No detail is spared to make this event a colorful portrayal of the traditions established over many centuries.
A week later no fewer than 400 musicians from every Oktoberfest band take part in an open-air concert – a musical treat for everyone.
