Amsterdam

A visit to Amsterdam, the capital of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and its most populous city, is an unforgettable experience. There are few places on the globe to combine its history, its charm, its canals and it artistic treasures. Few cities so successfully meld the different centuries together right up to the present the way Amsterdam does.

The most immediately noticeable element of Amsterdam is its network of canals. Amsterdam has more than one hundred kilometres of canals, about 90 islands and 1,500 bridges. The three main canals, Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizersgracht, dug in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age, form concentric belts around the city, known as the Grachtengordel. Alongside the main canals are 1550 monumental buildings. The 17th-century canal ring area, including the Prinsengracht, Keizersgracht, Herengracht and Jordaan, are now on the UNESCO World Heritage List, a good reason for Amsterdam's fame as the "Venice of the North".

You can't walk a kilometre without bumping into a masterpiece in the city. The Van Gogh Museum contains the world's largest collection by the city’s native son Vincent. A few blocks away, Vermeers, Rembrandts and other Golden Age treasures fill the glorious Rijksmuseum which has more than 7,500 exhibits. Among the most famous are Rembandt’s “Night Watch” and the display of Delftware (blue-and-white pottery), intricately detailed dolls' houses and the brand-new Asian Pavilion.  The Museum het Rembrandthuis offers more of Rembrandt via his etching-packed studio, while the Stedelijk Museum counts Matisses and Mondrians among its modern stock. And if you can’t travel as far as Russia’s Hermitage, there are important exhibitions from that vast collection at the Hermitage Amsterdam.

A site that reflects both one of the saddest periods in Western history but at the same time a triumph of the human spirit is Anne Frank’s House. During World War II, Anne  hid from Nazi persecution with her family and four other people in hidden rooms at the rear of the 17th-century canal house, known as the Secret Annex . Anne Frank did not survive the war, but in 1947 her wartime diary was published. The museum which opened in May 1960  preserves the hiding place, has a permanent exhibition on the life and times of Anne Frank, and an exhibition space about all forms of persecution and discrimination.

Amsterdam is also rich in the performing arts with a world famous symphony orchestra the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Their home is the Concertgebouw, which is across the Van Baerlestraat from the Museum Square. It is considered by critics to be a concert hall with some of the best acoustics in the world.

And the city also plays host to one of Europe’s most famous football teams, Ajax Amsterdam who play their matches at the Amsterdam ArenA.

Truly a city with something for everyone…what’s more the people are friendly, it’s a great place to cycle and leave your car behind, and there’s plenty of great restaurants, atmospheric bars and coffee shops as well. What are you waiting for?
