Arsenal Football Club ,also nicknamed as "The Gunners", was founded in 1886, originally as Dial Squad. It is one of England’s most successful clubs and has been in the top flight of English football for most of its existence, holding the record for most consecutive seasons - 89.
The 2003-2004 season will be remembered by Arsenal's fans for a long time. The team won the Premier League's title without losing a single game. It was Thierry Henry's season in which he gave a final and an unquestionable proof that he was one of the greatest players of his era. It was also the last league win for Arsenal up until now.
Arsenal have won 13 league titles, 11 FA Cups, 2 League Cups and 13 FA Community Shields, many of which have been won by their most successful and longest serving manager, Arsene Wenger. The club also finished as runners-up in the 2006 Champions League final, where they narrowly lost to FC Barcelona.
Wenger took over as manager in 1996 and transformed the club. His first achievements came in the 1997-1998 season when Arsenal won both the Championship and the FA Cup, followed by 2 more championship wins and 4 more FA CUP (last one in 2013-2014 season) so far. As mentioned, the 2003-2004 was probably the best season in Arsenal's history. The unbeaten run of that season which titled the squad with the name “The Invincibles" continued into the next season and stretched to 49 games, setting an English record.
Many world class players have played for Arsenal in Wenger's era such as Tony Adams, Ian Wright, Dennis Bergkamp, Cesc Fabregas as well as French World Cup winners Patrick Vieira, Robert Pires, Emmanuel Petit and the club’s all-time leading goal scorer, Thierry Henry, who scored a total of 228 goals in 376 appearances for The Gunners.
The record of appearances for the club is held by David O’Leary with 772 appearances (558 league games) between 1975 and 1993.
With a squad composed of players such as Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil, Mathieu Flamini, Santi Cazorla, Danny Welbeck, Lukas Podolsky, Theo Walcott and Alexix Sanchez, Arsenal will try to challenge all titles of the 2014-2015 season.
Arsenal’s home stadium is the Emirates Stadium which seats 60,000 spectators. In 2006 it replaced the Highbury Stadium which had served as Arsenal's home for 93 years. Situated around the stadium are 3 statues of club legends Tony Adams, Herbert Chapman and Theirry Henry.
The club’s two biggest rivals are Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United. The match between Arsenal and Tottenham is called the North London Derby and is one of the biggest Derbies in world football.
