Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund was founded in 1909 in Dortmund. The club’s founding year is featured prominently on the club’s badge. Dortmund plays its football at the Westfalenstadion, which has a capacity of over 80,000 people, making it the biggest football stadium in Germany. The Dortmund fans are well known for their passion; because of this, the Westfalenstadion is known to be an extremely intimidating ground for opposition players to play at. The atmosphere created in the stadium is one of the most exciting in European football.

The club is one of the most successful in Germany, having won the domestic Bundesliga title eight times, the German cup three times, the UEFA Cup twice and the UEFA Champions League once in 1997.

Dortmund is captained by Sebastian Kehl who has been at the club since 2011. The club is currently managed by Jürgen Klopp, who joined the club in 2008. Klopp guided Dortmund to back-to-back League titles in 2011 and 2012, confirming their return to power in German football. Despite his relatively young age, Klopp is considered to be one of the best managers in Europe.

The club’s biggest competitors are Bayern Munich. Matches between the two teams are heated affairs. The pinnacle of the two clubs’ rivalry came in 2013 when the two teams faced each other in the 2013 Champions League final, where Dortmund lost 2-1. After the final, Dortmund sold one of their most prized possessions, Mario Götze, to Bayern Munich.

Despite the loss of Götze, Dortmund still possesses a very talented squad with some of Germany’s best young players like Marco Reus, İlkay Gündoğan, Sven Bender and Mats Hummels. The club also recently signed striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Saint-Étienne to add to their attack.

Dortmund has established itself as one of Europe’s elite clubs, in a very exciting time where German football is on the rise.
