City play their football at the Etihad Stadium, which they moved into in 2003. The stadium seats 47,000 spectators, making it the 5th largest in the Premier League.

Nicknamed The Citizens, City had always been in the shadows of their Manchester neighbours, Manchester United. The club spent many years in the lower leagues of English football until they finally gained promotion back into the Premier League in 2001.

In 2008 City were taken over by the Abu Dhabi United Group, which would eventually see them become one of the richest and most powerful clubs in world football. In 2009 the club hired Roberto Mancini to take over from Mark Hughes as manager. City won their first trophy under Mancini in 2011 when the club won The FA Cup.

Undoubtedly, the club’s greatest achievement came in 2012 when they won the Premier League title on goal difference, edging past city rivals Manchester United. Thanks to a 94th minute goal by Sergio Aguero against Queens Park Rangers, City secured their first league title in 44 years.

The following season, City were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stages, for the second season in a row.  The club also lost the League title to Manchester United, ultimately costing Roberto Mancini his job. The club replaced Mancini with Manuel Pellegrini, who immediately signed Jesus Navas and Fernandinho, adding to their strong squad which already included the likes of Yaya Toure, Sergio Aguero and club captain, Vincent Kompany.

Due to City’s recent success, the club’s rivalry with Manchester United is at an all-time high. The Manchester derby is now one of the biggest and most heated in England. Both clubs now have new managers and Pellegrini will be hopeful that with his new recruits, City can reclaim the Premier League title from United.
