Since the breakup of the Soviet Union Russia's national football team played in only 2 tournaments (1994 and 2002). Brazil 2014 will be their 3rd tournament and as the host of the next one (2018) their qualification is assured for the 4th time.

In those 2 tournaments the Russians achieved a mere 2 wins against Cameroon and Tunisia. The win against Cameroon was of a great significance to the world cup history. Russia has won 6:1 failing to reach the knockout stage, but the 5 goals scored by Oleg Salenko shattered an old record of 4 which was shared by 6 players.

The Soviet Union team represented Russia and other 14 current countries in a unified team. This team was active between 1923 and 1992.

This team had a much better record qualifying to 7 tournaments stating in Brazil 1950.

In each of those tournaments they qualified to the next stage reaching the semifinals once (1966) and the quarter finals 3 more times.

One of the legendary players ever played in the Soviet Union team was Lev Yashin ("The Black Panther") with 78 appearances. He is considered to be the best Goalkeeper in the Soviet Union history and often mentioned as the best ever in the history of football. Oleg Blokhin (From the Ukraine), is the all time top goal scorer with 43 goals in 112 appearances (record high).

With a coach like Fabio Capello the Russian know that Brazil will be a perfect spot to prove that they will be anything but an easy rival.
